Halsey is 69 at the time of Halo Infinite. Moreover, Halsey based Cortana on herself. Halsey also created Cortana, the AI with whom Master Chief spends all of his time in the original Halo games. She’s also the former lover of Captain Jacob Keyes from Halo: Combat Evolved, and the mother of Miranda Keyes from Halo 2 and Halo 3. She’s usually pretty grumpy, although she does express some guilt over what she did to John and the others. She’s both a brilliant scientist and a war criminal (you know, for the child abduction and torture). Catherine Halsey is the founder of the Spartan-II program, the one that resulted in Master Chief. He’s 50 years old at the time of Halo Infinite. He then went through physical augmentation and training to become an early 2000s video game protagonist. John was abducted by the military when he was 6, chosen because he was both smart and strong for his age. In the original Halo video game trilogy, he fought a war against an alien group called the Covenant on humanity’s behalf. He’s the most famous Spartan - a genetically engineered squad of supersoldiers originally designed by the United Nations Space Command (Earth’s future military) to quell a human insurrection. Here’s the gist: Master Chief is a human man named John, his code number is 117, and Master Chief is both his rank and nickname. But even so, there are parts of the campaign that will make more sense if you know some light history, or refresh your memory if you’ve been away from the series for a while (or just forgot what happened at the end of Halo 5: Guardians).
